Key takeaways

  • Best overall: Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort, in Punta Mita, Mexico: 15 tented bungalows with private plunge pools, all-inclusive, for guests 16 and over.

  • Year-round or seasonal: Camp Sarika at Amangiri opens all year, while Paws Up, Dunton River Camp, and ULUM Moab close for winter.

  • Bathrooms decide the tier: Naviva, Dunton River Camp, ULUM Moab, Paws Up, and Camp Sarika all have private bathrooms in or attached to the tent, which is what separates luxury tents from most glamping.

  • All-inclusive is common: Naviva, Dunton River Camp, The Ranch at Rock Creek, and Paws Up include meals in the rate. ULUM Moab and Camp Sarika don't say so.

  • The Green O isn't tented: its rooms at Paws Up are free-standing cabins, so the list includes Paws Up's tented camps instead.

What makes a tented camp luxury

Most people don't picture a plunge pool when they think of camping, and luxury tented camps are built around that combination. A luxury tented camp keeps the soft walls, the sounds of the place, and the feeling of sleeping outside, and adds what a hotel room has: a real bed, a private bathroom, heating or air conditioning, and someone cooking.

The structures are built for it. Luxury Frontiers, the design firm behind several camps on this list, builds its tents on decks with semi-permanent frames made to handle heavy rain, strong sun, and high winds, with air conditioning and hot water.

Each of the seven camps below is listed with what you sleep in and when it's open, taken from the camp's own published details where they exist.

1. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: Best overall

15 tented bungalows above the Pacific, with a cap of 30 guests.

  • Location: the Punta Mita peninsula in Nayarit, Mexico, about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta's airport.

  • What you sleep in: a canvas-and-timber tented bungalow with a private plunge pool, an outdoor shower, and either a hammock or a fire pit.

  • Season: no seasonal closure is published.

  • Best for: couples who want a wellness-led stay with everything included.

Naviva has been open since December 2022, when it became Four Seasons' first tented resort in the Americas, on 48 acres of forest next to, but separate from, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. Luxury Frontiers designed the tents. It's adults-only for guests 16 and over, and the rate covers all meals and drinks.

Most of the daily schedule is built around wellness. A temazcal ceremony takes place in the resort's House of Heat, treatments take place in two standalone spa pods, and there's a pavilion for yoga and meditation. Condé Nast Traveler named it to its 2023 Hot List.

Downside: there's no children's program, since the resort is adults-only, and guests who want golf or more restaurants use Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, about five minutes away.

2. Dunton River Camp: Best for a riverside retreat

Eight canvas tents on the West Fork of the Dolores River.

  • Location: the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado.

  • What you sleep in: a canvas tent on a 640-square-foot platform, with an en-suite bathroom, a six-foot soaking tub, double vanities, and towel warmers.

  • Season: June through mid-October.

  • Best for: couples who want a small mountain camp with a wellness schedule.

There are only eight tents at Dunton River Camp, and they're split between river and mountain views. The rate includes all meals and drinks except the Reserve List wines, along with the riverside sauna and mountain bikes. The schedule adds yoga, Pilates, breathwork, and sound baths. Most of the season is adults-only, with family weeks in July and August.

Downside: transfers cost extra, and the season is short.

3. The Ranch at Rock Creek: Best for a ranch stay under canvas

10 glamping units on an all-inclusive Montana ranch.

  • Location: near Philipsburg, in western Montana.

  • What you sleep in: a canvas cabin by the creek with its own bathroom and a screened porch, or Sweet Grass, a three-room canvas cabin of 1,300 square feet.

  • Season: Trapper and Sweet Grass are open all year, so check which units are open for your dates.

  • Best for: families who want a ranch stay with a canvas roof.

The Ranch at Rock Creek is an all-inclusive ranch with a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating. Its classic canvas cabins, named Apache, Bull, Gila, and Rainbow, sit along the creek, and family canvas cabins have two rooms divided by a curtain.

Downside: not every glamping unit is a true tent. Trapper mixes canvas with wood and stone, so ask for a classic canvas cabin if that's what you want.

4. ULUM Moab: Best for red-rock country

50 suite tents between Canyonlands and Arches.

  • Location: La Sal, Utah, near Canyonlands and Arches National Parks.

  • What you sleep in: a suite tent of about 360 square feet with a king bed, a wood-burning stove, a private deck, and an en-suite rain shower.

  • Season: March 25 to Oct. 28 in 2027.

  • Best for: hikers and national park visitors who want a comfortable base.

ULUM Moab opened in 2023 as the luxury line from the team behind Under Canvas. It has hot and cold dipping pools, and yoga is complimentary.

Downside: with 50 tents it's the largest camp on this list, breakfast isn't included, and there's no bathtub.

5. Our Habitas Bacalar: Best for a lagoon setting

Canvas-walled A-frames on Mexico's Lake Bacalar.

  • Location: on Lake Bacalar, in Quintana Roo in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

  • What you sleep in: an A-frame room with canvas walls and a palapa roof, in lagoon or jungle settings.

  • Season: booking sites list stays through December 2026 and into 2027.

  • Best for: adults who want a design-led lagoon stay in the Yucatán.

Our Habitas Bacalar opened in 2021, and it's adults-only. It has 34 rooms, and its spa won the spa category of Marie Claire UK's 2022 Sustainability Awards.

Downside: room details vary between booking sites, so confirm your room type and what the rate includes when you book.

6. The Resort at Paws Up: Best for families in Montana

Six glamping camps, each with its own Camp Butler.

  • Location: Greenough, in western Montana.

  • What you sleep in: a tented suite with an en-suite bathroom, rain shower, and heated floors. Pinnacle camp's master baths add jetted tubs.

  • Season: mid-May to mid-October.

  • Best for: families, with bunk-bed tents at River Camp.

Paws Up runs six camps: Cliffside, Creekside, Moonlight, North Bank, Pinnacle, and River. Meals, airport transfers, and transport around the ranch are included, and the resort doesn't take gratuities. Its adults-only Green O section uses cabins rather than tents.

Downside: the season is about five months long, so ask which guided activities your rate includes.

7. Camp Sarika at Amangiri: Best for desert year-round

10 tented pavilions in the Utah desert, each with a heated pool.

  • Location: Canyon Point, Utah, near the Arizona border.

  • What you sleep in: a one- or two-bedroom tented pavilion with a private heated pool.

  • Season: open all year. The tents were built for temperatures from 20°F to 105°F.

  • Best for: couples and families who want Amangiri's spa from a tent.

Camp Sarika opened on July 1, 2020, and Aman describes it as the first year-round camp of its kind in North America. Luxury Frontiers designed it. Stays include full access to Amangiri's facilities, including the spa.

Downside: Aman doesn't publish whether meals are included, so ask before you book.

How to choose a luxury tented camp

  • Check the bathroom: Naviva, Dunton, ULUM Moab, Paws Up, and Camp Sarika have private bathrooms. Many mid-range glamping sites use a shared bathhouse, so confirm before you book.

  • Match the season to the place: Paws Up, Dunton River Camp, and ULUM Moab close for winter, while Camp Sarika stays open year-round.

  • Look at what the rate covers: Naviva, Dunton, The Ranch at Rock Creek, and Paws Up include meals. ULUM Moab doesn't include breakfast.

  • Think about the age policy: Naviva is 16 and over, Our Habitas Bacalar is adults-only, and Dunton is adults-only outside its family weeks. Paws Up and Camp Sarika welcome children.
