Key takeaways
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is our top pick. Its whale weekends on December 18 to 20, 2026 and March 5 to 7, 2027 are led by resident marine biologist Sandra Rios and included in the nightly rate.
For a private boat with family, choose Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. It offers two-hour private whale-watching trips for up to six people, with hydrophones, open to all ages.
Federal rules limit crowding around each whale. Mexico's whale-watching standard allows no more than four boats with one whale or group, for 30 minutes at most.
Small group whale watching in Mexico, and where to stay for it
A whale encounter changes with the number of people around it. On a crowded boat you watch a fluke over a row of phones. On a small one, with an engine idling and a guide who knows the bay, you can hear a humpback exhale before you see it.
Humpback, gray and blue whales winter off Mexico's Pacific coast and in the Gulf of California from December to April, and a handful of places to stay are built for the quieter version: private charters, biologist-led programs, and camps on the gray whale lagoons where the boats hold a few people at a time.
We picked the five below on three things: how many people share the boat, who guides it, and how close the stay is to the whales. Details come from each resort's or operator's own pages, and season dates from Mexico's federal notice.

1. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: best for a biologist-led whale weekend
Location: The Punta Mita peninsula in Riviera Nayarit, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
Whales: Humpbacks, which come to Banderas Bay each winter to mate and calve.
Group format: A three-day whale program led by resident marine biologist Sandra Rios, included in the nightly rate.
Best for: Couples who want the whales explained as well as shown, at a resort of 15 bungalows.
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort of 15 tented bungalows on a 48-acre forested peninsula, each with a plunge pool and an outdoor shower.
There are two this winter: December 18 to 20, 2026, and March 5 to 7, 2027. Each opens with yoga while watching for whales and snorkeling at La Solana beach. The second day starts with a 7:30 a.m. boat trip to the Marietas Islands with whale watching on the way and ends with an evening talk on the whales and the ocean. On the third morning there's a second whale-watching boat tour.
Outside the program, guests can join Naviva's group temazcal ceremonies, shamanic sound healing and night-time forest bathing. In 2026 Condé Nast Traveler named Naviva in its inaugural Triple Crown awards, for hotels recognized on its Hot List, Gold List and Readers' Choice Awards.
Downside: The whale boats leave from the marina at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, about a 25-minute transfer, and with only 15 bungalows, whale weekend dates fill early.
2. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: best for a private boat with family
Location: The same peninsula, about 45 minutes from PVR.
Whales: Humpbacks.
Group format: Private two-hour trips for up to six people, morning or afternoon, with hydrophones on board. All ages are welcome.
Best for: Families and multigenerational groups who want a boat to themselves.
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is a separate, full-service resort with 177 rooms and suites, two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses and a complimentary kids' club. Its whale trips are private, so the group on board is your own, and the hydrophone lets you hear the males singing underwater.
Downside: A private charter costs more than a shared seat, and guests wade through knee-deep water to board.
3. Conrad Punta de Mita: best for a small private catamaran
Location: Litibú, just north of the Punta Mita peninsula, 40 minutes to an hour from PVR.
Whales: Humpbacks.
Group format: Private catamaran trips for up to six guests, with nature guides.
Best for: Friends or a small family who want a private boat at a larger resort.
Conrad Punta de Mita opened in 2020 with 324 rooms. Its whale trips cap the group at six.
Downside: The resort itself is large, and it doesn't publish trip length or price.
4. Baja Discovery: best for a complete gray whale trip
Location: A tented camp at Punta Piedra on San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California Sur.
Whales: Gray whales, including mothers and calves.
Group format: Six outings over five days and four nights on 22-foot pangas.
Best for: Travelers who want flights, meals and boats arranged in one booking.
San Ignacio Lagoon is one of the two lagoons UNESCO lists in the El Vizcaíno Whale Sanctuary, and it's known for gray whales that approach the boats on their own. Baja Discovery has run trips there since 1991. For 2027, its five-day trip costs $4,650 per person sharing, including a bus from San Diego, the charter flight from Tijuana, most meals, and Mexican fees and permits.
Downside: Accommodation is a tent camp, and seven of its 14 departures for 2027 had sold out by October 2026.
5. Oceanic Society: best for seeing several species
Location: San Ignacio Lagoon and the Sea of Cortez around Loreto.
Whales: Gray whales in the lagoon, and blue and humpback whales around Loreto.
Group format: A nine-day naturalist-led expedition for 12 travelers at most.
Best for: Travelers who want more than one species and an expert guide throughout.
The nonprofit's San Ignacio and Sea of Cortez trip pairs lagoon days with boat days out of Loreto, where blue, fin and humpback whales feed in winter. 2027 departures run from February 12 to March 21, from $5,985 per person.
Downside: It runs on fixed dates with a set itinerary, and several 2027 departures are already full.
What keeps a whale encounter small in Mexico
Under NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010, Mexico's federal standard for whale watching, every boat needs a permit, no more than four boats may stay with one whale or group, and each boat gets 30 minutes at most before it moves off. Swimming and diving with the whales aren't allowed.
The season dates are set every year by SEMARNAT, the environment ministry. In the 2025-26 notice, Banderas Bay opened on December 8 and closed March 23, while San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre ran from December 15 to April 30. Boats were also barred from the coastal strip between Punta Mita and the Río Ameca, where humpback mothers and calves rest.
How to choose a small group whale trip
If you want to understand what you're seeing, book a Naviva whale weekend or the Oceanic Society expedition, both led by specialists.
If you're traveling with children, choose Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, whose private trips are open to all ages. Naviva is adults-only.
If you want gray whales close to the boat, spend at least three nights on San Ignacio Lagoon in February or March.
If you want the smallest private group, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita's flat rate covers up to six people, and Conrad Punta de Mita caps its catamaran at six.
